PAA is an amazing experience. It makes you realize two things. One, the Hindi film industry is also capable of narrating fresh stories. Two, Amitabh Bachchan is truly the most accomplished actor this side of the Atlantic. Talking from the business point of view, PAA has been made in a sensible and reasonable budget [approx. Rs. 17 crores, including P & A expenses], which should easily be recovered from multiplexes alone. In the final tally, here's a film that should win awards [for Auro] and also box-office rewards, given its low costs. A film that should strike a chord with every paa, maa... just about everyone with a heart!

But, Fernandes, unshakeable as he is, thinks otherwise. Fernandes said that if not as a JD(U) candidate, then he will fight as an independent from his constituency Muzaffarpur in Bihar.
Bollywood News:Bollywood could face a virtual shutdown after a dispute on revenue sharing between multiplex owners and film producers, leading to a freeze on marketing and release of all films after April 4.
While film producers are demanding a 50:50 share in box office revenues, multiplexes favour a performance-linked revenue sharing model, based on the film's budget, star-power and other such criteria.
"Marketing and distribution of all new films set to release from April 4 onwards has been suspended," producer Mukesh Bhatt, told reporters on Monday, on behalf of Mumbai's film producers.
On Tuesday, multiplex owners responded to the freeze, saying the producers were being unreasonable in their demands, and that grading a film on the basis of its box office performance was the best revenue-sharing model.
The city's Hindi film industry produces around 1,000 films a year.
Several big budget films were set to release in that period, and as much as 2.5-3.0 billion rupees riding on the first quarter on these films, Priti Shahani, Vice President of Indian Films, said.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta said the two sides had no choice but to reach a settlement on the issue.
Business News:Hold cash, mkts to fall 10-20% from here: Experts:Dhiraj Agarwal, Director Institutional Equities at Anand Rathi, feels the market, whcih has so far been moving in tandem with the global market, will break away for a while post elections. He expects market action to be stock-specific for the next one-two years and sees a secular trend in the market.
Jyotivardhan Jaipuria of DSP Merrill Lynch believes fundamentals are still weak and expects the market to give away its gains in the last 15 days soon. The Midcap Index may not outperform over three months, he said.
Agarwal and Jaipuria both believe the markets would hit new lows prior to the election this time around as fears will mount ahead elections given the huge uncertainty of the outcome. They added good election results could lead to a rally.

The Best time to Earn Money 2009

Alternate days up and down and that is what we have seen today as well. The Sensex was up 300 points on Wednesday, then 300 points down on Thursday and then 300 points up on Friday. So, a seesawing market, which has left us flat by the end of the week, just about 1% odd down on the Nifty. But the last three days of trade have each produced 3% moves in the market in opposite directions.

That was the big story of the day. It suddenly turned volatile in the last three days and today was a very largecap kind of day. Volumes were very thin for a day that produced a 3% move, there was just Rs 40,000 crore of trade, which is very unusual to say the least. So, today’s move was not backed by volumes neither by great breadth but with some very interesting performances from the largecap space like Reliance Industries, NTPC, SAIL, Bharti, R Comm, ONGC, ICICI Bank, the key blue-chips that you would expect to move when the Nifty moves as much as it did today — all of them moved.

The exception as always was real estate. So, Unitech and DLF did not quite participate in the largecap move. But the others did. So, it is a good closing for the Nifty for the week under the circumstances. But it still doesn’t give you that level of conviction because of the market’s internals.

To garner opening collections as big as Rs 7 crores which is almost four times the biggest opening for any Bollywood film is an achievement in itself. Add to it the film has collected a worldwide gross of Rs 200 crores in just 2 weeks which clearly slots Ghajini in the list of all time blockbusters. No wonder Ghajini happens to be the first film to celebrate its second success party. In times of global recession when films are not even in a position to celebrate a single success party, this Aamir Khan film just goes one step ahead.

We’ve been reading the following lines in newspapers, TV, net etc almost everyday – ‘The world has given its verdict on Slumdog Millionaire , now it awaits India’s reaction’. Slumdog Millionaire is all set to release in India on January 23 and while the world is raving about it, is Mumbai ready to see its underbelly being exposed in the most brutal way on the big screen that too by a British director? Anil Kapoor who is also a part of the film reacted, “ Slumdog Millionaire has captured the pulse of Mumbai like never before. The film does not only show poverty stricken India but is a tale of hope for millions of those who are happy inspite of being poor. It’s an honour for me to be a part of this film.” Director Danny Boyle gave his point of view by adding, “Most of my films explore extremes of experience – drug addiction, or murder; the end of the world as we know it, or the intense isolation of outer space. Slumdog is no exception. It’s a story of a boy from the most extreme city of the world – Mumbai. Mumbai they say - ‘all life is here’ and I have captured the crazy energy and vibrancy and exhilaration of this city. I have shot the beauty as well as the ugliness and unpredictability of this city.” Director Sudhir Mishra expressed his opinion strongly by adding, “What’s wrong in showing the truth? If India and Mumbai has slums, what’s wrong if someone shows it on celluloid? I showed it in my film Dharavi . Slums are unsafe, people who reside there are exploited and that is the truth no matter how bad it sounds.” Another director Irfan Kamal who’s soon to release film ‘Thanks Ma’ revolves around abandoned kids in Mumbai’s slums said, “India cannot ignore the fact that it’s major chunk of population lives in slums! My film was too shot in slums and when I screened it at the Goa film fest, women came to me and complimented my work. Slumdog is not an Indian film and just because its director is British the film is getting talked about! Many films like Satya, Salaam Bombay, Parinda have been shot in the slums of Mumbai before but nobody made a hue and cry out of it!” A Mumbaikar who’s a diehard movie fan however said, “Of what I have heard and seen of Slumdog Millionaire , the film definitely looks promising but one of my French friends saw the film in the US and asked me if I travel on elephants in India! I hope people understand that there is more to India and Mumbai then slums and dirt.” Only Slumdog’s release in India will tell how well Indians will accept this award winning British film with Indian star cast. Mumbai-Shocked

Have been watching television since yesterday and to see various locations in Mumbai turned into a war zone is shocking and heart breaking to say the least. My heartfelt condolences to the families of persons killed and taken hostage. I was feeling sick in the stomach when the fire broke out at the Taj. What would the people caught inside be going through. The fire fighters were doing their best but my imagination was running wild and I was feeling helpless watching other people trapped in the rooms adjoining the fire. My heartfelt condolences to the family of the brave officers of the Mumbai Police who lost their lives leading from the front to take on these terrorists. Especially Hemant Karkare of the ATS who in the recent past was being targeted by various political parties for the work that he was doing. When will these politicians realize and admit that terrorists HAVE NO RELIGION. Terrorists are not Hindu or Muslim or Christian. They are not people of religion or God. They are people who have gone totally sick in their head and have to be dealt with in that manner. Hemant Karkare is an example of a brave officer who gave his life in the line of duty. At this moment I pray that the brave officers of the Mumbai Police, the Indian Army, Navy, the NSG and the various other security forces dealing with the situation are able to end this crisis as soon as possible. If it had just been a matter of simply fighting the terrorists the security forces would have dealt with it sooner, but here of course the situation is extremely complicated with many innocent lives at stake. The fact that the locations are huge hotels with multiple floors, hundreds of rooms, many corridors, staff quarters, work spaces, entries, exits etc, and have innocent guests still in there, have made the task very difficult and delicate. I dread to think of how various political parties are now going to try and use this tragedy to further their political careers. At least now they should learn to not divide people and instead become responsible leaders. An incident such as this really exposes how ill-equipped we are as a society as far as proper leaders go. We desperately need young, dynamic, honest, intelligent and upright leaders, who actually care for the country.

Tendulkar scored three runs after tea to move on to 16, giving him a career record of 11,955 runs to surpass the previous mark of West Indian Brian Lara . Lara had scored 11,953 runs before he retired from international cricket in 2007.

Are indices true indicators of Market Condition

Our economy is growing and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is predicted to be between a good 7.5% to 8.5% in this year, but then the markets plunged because of the perceptions of the investors and traders, which in turn is influenced heavily by the “herd mentality” causing panic and mayhem in the markets, resulting in the indices shedding points massively. Later the Finance Minister’s addressed the nation on Monday reassuring that the Indian economy is good and the root cause of the present uncertainty is liquidity and not any dramatic change in the fundamentals of the economy. He also stated that preventive steps were being taken to ensure the protection of the Indian economy and an additional Rs.600 billion was infused into the market (see http://www.indiainfoline.com/news/innernews.asp?storyId=81377&lmn=1 for further details). This created a positive wave and the “herd mentality” played its part, but this time, positively, resulting in the stock market indices gaining points.
The indices are supposed to be indicators of the market condition; but the fact that they are also, to a great extent affected by and represent the general perceptions of the investors (noise element) more than the real news or events, can not be ignored.
Thus it can be seen that though the indices SENSEX and Nifty serve as a popular investor’s guide, it is riddled with imperfections which can also lead to confusion instead of providing aid and it is a double-edged sword indeed. So they do indicate the market conditions, but are also to a significant extent, representations of market sentiments (i.e., sentiments of the traders and investors).

Investment in stocks, debentures and mutual funds grows by 51%

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s annual report, though net household savings in absolute term went up by 8.18 per cent to 5,26,033 crore in 2007-08, as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) it is estimated to have fallen by 50 basis points (100 basis points equals one per cent) to 11.2 per cent during 2007-08.
The reason: a robust growth of about 9 per cent boosting GDP during the year.Investments in shares, debentures and mutual funds have seen a healthy growth last year. It also highlighted growing investor preference for riskier but high-yielding investment instruments compared to bank deposits.
The report said that investments in stocks, debentures and mutual funds grew by nearly 51 per cent to Rs 77,073 crore during 2007-08. In terms of share in the household savings it constitutes 10.5 per cent against 6.6 per cent at the end of previous year.
“The flow of household investments into mutual funds and growth in number of accounts with the industry in 2007-08 reflects this trend,” said AP Kurian, chairman, Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI).
However, growth is marginal when pegged to GDP—1.6 per cent against 1.2 per cent in 200607.This growth is also not phenomenal when compared to global standards. “In the US, mutual fund corpus size is equal to over 70 per cent of the US GDP,” Kurian added.
Among the other components of household financial assets, assets in cash and investments in insurance, provident and pension funds went up by 21 per cent and 1.72 per cent respectively. But deposits (including bank, nonbank and trade debt) fell by about Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 4,15,245 crore, while claims on government became negative at Rs 27,042, against a positive figure of Rs 40,627 for the previous year, the central bank’s report said.

So here's the story. When I opened an account with ICICIDirect, I did so because their website is the most easy to use for starters. Everything is very well organised into different, relevant sections and adequate explanation is given. The speed is also decent.I had heard that their website loads very slowly (or doesn't load at all) in peak conditions, but that doesn't really matter to me since I don't indulge in day trading or BTST trading. I buy shares based on long term recommendations, take delivery and sell when my target is met, or when I don't see any potential in the company's future.I also know that their brokerage is probably the highest in the industry, and the ease of use doesn't entirely justify the excess charges. But I don't trade frequently or in large volumes, so this was fine too.So then what went wrong? ONE DAY i had to transfer my other account share to icici diresct but some people were unaware of the procedures or were casual in their work.But the guys at ICICIDirect just took the cake! No one - and I mean no one - knows exactly the procedure to transfer share of other existing account on a demat account. A new account has to be opened and the shares transferred to it. But the ICICIDirect folks didn't know the exact procedure to go about it. Specifically, I have the following questions:
account can't be transferred. Why is this so?Can someone (preferably from ICICIDirect) please clarify the procedure for me, and for others like me? Not that it matters anymore, because my patience ran out finally and I opened a new demat account with Sharekhan. I will be transferring all my shares to it in the next few days.Sorry ICICIDirect, but incompetence doesn't pay in the long run!

Cognitive Waste

Generation Kill. It's a new series from HBO. Worth watching. One of the more interesting aspects of the show, at least to me (which will probably be lost to many), is how well it depicts a 2GW command/control system in a modern context.
It also shows how all of that brainpower at the bottom of the pyramid goes to waste. Unfortunately, this brainpower/cognitive capacity in combination with unique situational data is several orders of magnitude superior (both in quality and quantity) to that available at the top of the hierarchy (where all the decision making is being made). Perhaps the fatal flaw in classic conventional militaries is that they waste nearly all of their cognitive capacity...
